The history of the archipelago is troublesome. Discovered in 1500 by Amerigo Vespucci, in 1504 it was donated in the form of hereditary captaincy to Fernando de Noronha, noble Portuguese. It suffered various invasions, passing through Dutch, English and French hands, until in 1737 the French were driven out by the Pernambuco captaincy. Then, 10 forts were built—among which was the Remédios Fort—with the purpose of guaranteeing the possession of the islands. With time, the fort was used also as a penitentiary for common prisoners as well as political prisoners.Until 1988 it was a federal territory. During the constituent assembly it was again annexed to Pernambuco as a state district.

The fixed population corresponds to 2.051 inhabitants. The main economical activities are: civil service, fishing, agriculture and tourism. There are no private properties and the majority of the population is (or has been) bond to some public organ. The island depends on external supplies, both money and food. The goods are scarce and more expensive than at the continent. It is well advised to bring medicines and other products of your preference to the island.

Fernando de Noronha has a reasonable infrastructure. Highway (BR-363), the TV Golfinho (Dolphin Television) which retransmits the Globo Television, the radio station Golfinho FM, the airport, the harbor, elementary school as well as high school, hospital, drugstore, bank, travel agency, supermarket, pubs, a community of artisans, long distance dialing services, post-office, boats and automobiles for rent, in addition to a garbage treating station and drain system being built.

At the island of Fernando de Noronha solely there are 16 beaches. 16 unique beaches: it is impossible to choose the most beautiful. The water transparency reaches 40 meters. Surely an invitation to free or scuba diving, as long as one does not forget: every predatory activity is forbidden and subject to penalties.
Inside sea - goes around the north side of the island, directed towards the continent:

Santo Antônio Bay - natural anchoringplace. There there is a huge stone pier.
Cachorro Beach - situated right below the Remédios Fort, today it is a tourist point with pubs and artwork. The name comes from an ancient fountain with dog's face.
Conceição Beach - besides the beach, there are the ruins of the Conceição Fort.
Morro do Pico (Peak Hill) - Being 323 meters high, the highest point of the Archipelago, is equivalent to a building with more than 100 floors. A little iron stair takes to the lighthouse at the top. It is said that the view is fantastic but to see it you will need an authorization from IBAMA. I preferred not to request it. The way up seemed frightening to me and the beaches, beautiful ...
Boldró Beach - Excellent point for surfing, at the high tide. It shelters the ruins of fort São Pedro do Boldró.
Americano Beach - Small and desert, it seems to have been the favorite one of the American military men who served at the base that the USA maintained at the island.
Bode Beach - Various transparent pools, lots of fun and diving.
Dois Irmãos Hill - Two elevations at the seashore, they determine the beginning of the National Park.
Cacimba do Padre Beach - Has a drinkable water fountain and is also the local of the São João Baptista Fort of the two brothers (ruins).
Porcos Bay - Small, between two elevations, the access is difficult. But it is difficult to resist to the natural aquariums replete with fish.
Sancho Bay - Sancho is a little inlet, isolated and of difficult access. Only at low tide the track through the stones may be used. Another thrilling (and unusual) option is to use an old metal ladder stuck into a narrow crack in the rock, which links the beach to the top of the wall. The high part proportions good photographs.
Dolphins Bay - The actual name is Carreiro de Pedra Inlet. The access is forbidden.
Sapata Gate - Extreme point of the main island. Difficult access. The water has carved the stone originating an enormous hole.
Outside Sea - goes around the south side of the island, directed towards the ocean, it is exposed to the strong winds
Leão Beach - At high tide the water goes through gaps at the bottom of the stones, forming some spouts. At low tide, natural pools are formed. A turtle protection area, its name (Leão Beach - Lion Beach) derives from the big rock with the appearance of a sea lion. Close to this rock, the one called Viuvinha (little widow) is a redoubt of birds.
Ponta das Caracas - Between the Lion Beach and the Sueste Bay. Ideal for diving. Difficult access.
Sueste Bay - Calm sea, safe harbor. Ruins of the São Joaquim do Sueste. Here there is the only occurrence of mangrove in an oceanic island at the South Atlantic.
Atalaia Beach - Filled with black polished stones. Pools and spouts. In front of the Frade Hill.
Caieira - Rachel Hole, hole carved in the stones by the sea. Forbidden to enter into the water.

Other points of interest:

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Church - 1772. Put into safekeeping in 1981, and completely restored in 1988.
São Miguel Palace - administrative headquarters of the State District of Fernando de Noronha. It occupies the local where former there was the administration of the penitentiary.
Museum e Historical Files - with photographs and documents, something about the history of Fernando de Noronha.
Fort Ruins, Capela da Quixaba, at the old neighborhood for bad behaved prisoners.
Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Fort - 1737. It was the main fort built among the ten that were built during this period. It was used as a penitentiary and as a headquarter for the army. Put into safekeeping in 1961. From its walls one has an exceptional view of the stone pier at the Santo Antônio Bay, the Vila dos Remédios (Remédios Village) and the beaches near the Morro do Pico (Peak Hill). It is really worth to take some photos.
Walking is an interesting option, especially for someone who stays for several days at the island. During the low-tide it is possible to go through all the beaches situated at the inside sea side. All of them should be visited, they are all magnificent. You should always use shoes during your walks: the stones are hot. You should not miss a free or scuba diving. There are companies - e.g. "Águas Claras" - that rent the necessary equipment. Other companies promote diving courses and programs at specific areas
